As a member of the Halifax County Board of Commissioners, my mission has always been simple: to serve all the people of this great county—no matter where they live. That’s why I’m writing today to offer my full and public support for Commissioner Redding’s recent motion to create a countywide Recreation Director position and establish a Halifax County Recreation Department.
Commissioner Redding’s proposal was bold, visionary, and rooted in a deep commitment to our people. It wasn’t just about creating a new position—it was about opening doors to new opportunities for children, families, and seniors in every corner of our county.
Whether you live in Hobgood, Hollister, Lake Gaston, Weldon, Littleton, Roanoke Rapids, Enfield, or Scotland Neck, your access to quality recreational programming should not depend on your zip code. Right now, the opportunities are uneven—and that’s something we have a responsibility to change.
Recreation is about more than play. It’s about health. It’s about mental well-being. It’s about after-school programs that keep our youth safe and engaged. It’s about creating spaces where our seniors can stay active, connected, and supported.
Commissioner Redding understands this, and so do I.
While his motion didn’t pass this time, I want the people of Halifax County to know that I stand with him—and I will continue to work alongside him to bring this vision to life. We owe it to our communities to make recreation a priority.
Imagine a future where families in Littleton have the same access to programs as those in Weldon, where kids in Hollister can join county-wide leagues, and where seniors in Hobgood can enjoy wellness classes without needing to leave their town. That’s the future we’re working toward.
And we’re just getting started.
In service and with determination,
Commissioner Sammy D. Webb
Halifax County Board of Commissioners
